SWAN and Mioty Join Forces for a Smarter Water Future

A new partnership aims to make water utilities not just digital, but intelligent. In January 2025 the Smart Water Networks Forum (SWAN) and the mioty Alliance joined forces to strengthen global smart-water systems, combining expertise in utility management with advanced wireless communication.

The challenge is scale. As utilities install more sensors to track leaks, pressure and water quality, the need for reliable, low-energy data transfer grows. The alliance seeks to answer that demand by merging SWAN’s international network of digital-water specialists with mioty’s long-range, low-power Internet of things technology.

“The key to a truly smart-water future isn’t just sensors, it’s communication,” said a SWAN representative at the launch. “This alliance gives utilities the confidence to accelerate digital transformation knowing their data will remain fast, secure, and dependable.”

Developed from years of industrial research, mioty’s system allows thousands of devices to send tiny packets of data across long distances while consuming little power. This is useful for networks buried underground or spread across rural areas. Integrated into SWAN’s digital frameworks, the technology could help utilities automate maintenance, anticipate failures and cut water loss.

The tie-up is already viewed as a strategic milestone. Climate change and ageing infrastructure are straining supply systems worldwide. Partnerships that link engineering know-how with communication innovation could help utilities meet growing environmental and operational pressures.

Still, the road ahead is hardly smooth. Upgrading legacy systems, improving cybersecurity and retraining staff will take time and investment. Yet the direction is clear: connected water networks are moving from vision to necessity. The SWAN and mioty alliance offers a glimpse of how utilities may soon manage their most precious resource with less waste and more wisdom.
